Ways to Hide in Winter
by Sarah St. Vincent
View in Library Catalog
book cover

Set in the remote woods of Pennsylvania's Blue Ridge Mountains, this book centers on a young woman who has secluded herself from the world to recover from a past trauma. A foreigner mysteriously shows up in the area; he also seems traumatized and haunted by his past. Although their lives seem as bleak as the winter woods setting, a mutual understanding creates a tenuous friendship between them. Disturbing truths revealed at the end were difficult to fathom and highlighted the extent to which humans can hurt each other. I was absorbed by this book; it wasn't a joyful read but was worthwhile.

I think this book is five stars because in the beginning of the book, Greg is giving examples of how his life is a tv show.

This was a quick read for me. Sparks kept up a brisk pace and created richly drawn characters who drew me in and made me eager to continue. I read the book quickly, eager to find out how it would all pan out; the ending was very satisfying.

All The Beauty In The World
by Patrick Bringley

book cover

In this book, author Patrick Bringley becomes a security guard for the Met Museum as his way to deal with a difficult time in his life. His brother just passed away from cancer and he hoped that being close to all the beauty the museum houses will provide him some relief and inner peace. The chapters share with us his experiences with humans navigating the halls of the museum and showing us the day to day life of a guard like himself. All his years there helped him learn more about art, about humans and most importantly about himself— all the while going through the journey of healing.

I liked that Johnny wore a pot on his head. My favorite part of the story was when he gave away apples.

My favorite part of this book was when Ben figured out that there was a bomb under the school.

Art Monsters
by Lauren Elkin

This book explores the ways in which feminist artists have navigated the challenges in making work as women in a patriarchal world. It is like a collage, drawing works from different periods and making links between a variety of artists. It addresses the idea of what an “art monster” is — someone who has renounced the “mundane” like housework, children, etc. Society questions if one can be both a mother and an artist. This is something that I can relate with — which made it an interesting read.
